We’re all influenced by national and international media portrayals of beauty, but standards trickle down to the local level. That’s one reason why certain types of plastic surgery are more common in some regions than others. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has the latest trends divided by regions, and the results are surprising.
Breast augmentation rates are highest on the West Coast. There’s a good reason for that. The southern California lifestyle, after all, is based on good weather most of the time, and that means female residents wear more body revealing clothing. It makes sense that if breasts are more exposed through skimpier clothing, more women would opt to make their breasts look as good as possible. The opposite coast, meanwhile, has the largest number of male breast reduction surgeries. New York and New Jersey rule in this more niche market.
Butt lifts are more popular in the Midwest than anywhere else. Butt implants are more often found in the Southeast than any other region, as are pectoral and calf implants.
Is there something in the environment causing more hair loss in the South, or is balding less culturally accepted? It’s hard to say, but more hair transplant procedures are done below the Mason-Dixon Line than anywhere else in the country.
Overall, the top cosmetic procedures performed nationally last year are led by breast augmentation, up 3 percent, followed by liposuction, up 5 percent. Next comes nose reshaping, but that has dropped by 2 percent from 2016. The number of eyelid surgeries remains the same from 2016, while the tummy tuck rose 2 percent.
