Some women get rid of baby weight within a few months of giving birth. Some women still look pregnant when their child is approaching the first birthday. A tummy tuck can give you back that pre-pregnancy body, but do you have to wait until you’re sure childbearing is done to have the procedure? Not necessarily.
For most women, it’s simply less expensive and more convenient to opt for a tummy tuck after they figure their family is complete. Spending thousands of dollars on a surgery when you hope to have another child in a couple of years doesn’t make financial sense.
It is possible to have another baby after a tummy tuck. Unless a woman has her tubes tied, there’s no guarantee she won’t have another pregnancy, planned or not.
You may have heard of celebrities who had a tummy tuck right after giving birth. Most plastic surgeons don’t think this is a good idea. Instead, they recommend waiting three to six months post-birth before scheduling the surgery. Pregnancy takes a lot out of a woman, and so does nursing and caring for a newborn. Throwing an additional surgery into the mix just makes life more stressful. In fact, the pain medications necessary after surgery means no breast feeding during that time period. A woman can still pump her breasts to keep milk flowing and eventually nurse her child when the drugs are out of her system, but that takes a lot of discipline. It’s also impossible to tell right away just what needs doing to the post-pregnancy abdomen. Hormones affecting the body and skin are still active for several months after delivery. The aesthetics of the abdomen may completely change within a few months, making a tummy tuck unnecessary.
If you know you’re going to have a C-section, then you absolutely can’t have the tummy tuck at the same time. A C-section wreaks havoc with the immune system, increases the risk of infection and is just plain painful. Of course, many women go into the delivery room thinking they’ll have a natural birth, only to require a C-section. If that’s the case, concentrate on recovery and your new baby and put thoughts of a tummy tuck on the back burner.
Probably the best time to get a tummy tuck is about the time of your last child’s first birthday. By that time, your body has completely recovered from childbirth and you know whether or not you need that tummy tuck.
