When 33-year-old Christa Hendershot got engaged last fall, she wanted to show off her engagement ring on social media.
After realizing she didn’t like the way her hands looked, she turned to plastic surgery to make them appear more selfie-worthy, shelling out over $3,000 for hand rejuvenation.
Hendershot explained to her doctor that she was unhappy with veiny hands and red knuckles. She was happy about their appearance within minutes of the procedure.
“The veins are not as blue,” Hendershot told ABC News.
The doctor commented many of his patients show him self-taken photos of their hands and point out their flaws.
“I’ve noticed over the last six months [that] patients actually bring a selfie in the examining room,” he told ABC News. “They show me what bothers them and what they would like to fix.”
The search for the perfect selfie photo has gone to the extreme. Filters and photo edits no longer cut it for some selfie takers. Instead, these perfectionists undergo plastic surgery in hopes of a better selfie.
Thirty-three-year-old Jen Muir realized that she hated the way her nose looked after seeing her wedding day photos and has since stopped taking selfies.
“I can see everybody posting pictures of themselves and I’m thinking, ‘Why can’t I do it? What’s the problem?’” the Costa Rica native told ABC News. “I saw a guy taking a selfie one of these days and I thought, ‘I wish, I wish I could do it.’”
Muir decided to undergo $15,000 rhinoplasty for a better selfie.
“I want to change my profile,” Muir told ABC News. “I feel like my nose hangs. I also want to change my bump. I feel like it’s too big.”
Muir’s New York City based surgeon Dr. Samuel Rizk credits social media for an increase in business.
“I personally would see two to three patients a day that have come in from selfies and social media,” Rizk explained to ABC News.
“I love it,” Muir told ABC News. “I just see my eyes and my lips and my teeth. I can see my teeth more and that’s what I wanted.”
