It still ranks far behind breast augmentation, nose jobs and liposuction, but the demand for labiaplasty is growing. It was up 39 percent last year. Unlike those other procedures, only the most intimate of acquaintances will ever see the results. Labiaplasty removes enlarged, or hypertrophic, labia, giving women more attractive private parts. While most women undergo the surgery for cosmetic purposes, there are physical reasons for undergoing labiaplasty. Hygiene is one factor, as enlarged labia are more difficult to keep clean. Enlarge labia can become painful during intercourse, interfering with sexual pleasure. Labiaplasty also gets rid of the infamous “camel toe.”
The labia consist of the outer labia – the labia majora – and the inner labia, or labia minora. Many people refer to them as the vaginal “lips.” In most women, the labia aren’t symmetrical. Hypertrophic labia occur when one of the sets enlarges.
Besides cleanliness and sex, there are other physical issues some women face that may benefit from labiaplasty. Enlarged labia may interfere with various recreational and sporting activities, including bicycling and horseback riding. A woman who has lost a lot of weight may have to deal with outsized labia. A downside to genital piercing – enlarged labia.
The procedure itself is relatively straightforward. The surgeon removes labial tissue based on its overgrowth. Not all women need tissue removed on both labia – sometimes only one side is enlarged. After the surgery, women must refrain from sex for at least four weeks, and not use a tampon during their next menstrual period. The procedure isn’t done during menstruation, and it’s not performed on pregnant women.
Even if most people can’t see her labia, a woman knows her husband, lover or potential lover can. Women undergo breast augmentation, rhinoplasty and the like to look good and perhaps feel normal. Many women look to labiaplasty for the same reason. No one wants to think their most intimate areas are unattractive, and feel self-conscious. Like more visible types of plastic surgery, labiaplasty can give women self-confidence. Very few women are going to post before and after shots of their labia on social media, but that’s not the point. Even as privacy continually erodes, there are some things and their significant others want to keep to just themselves. Labiaplasty is a gift a woman gives to herself and her beloved.
