St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Carlos Beltran isn’t the type of guy to make promises he can’t keep. After offering to pay for former teammate Jon Niese’s rhinoplasty in 2011, news outlets report that Niese has shown up to the New York Mets training camp sporting a slightly straighter nose.
It’s not uncommon for teammates to buy each other dinner or other small gifts during the season, especially if one made a great play to save the other guy's hide. But no one truly expected Beltran to foot the $10,000 bill for Niese's surgery. It started last spring, when Beltran poked fun at Niese’s admittedly sizeable beak, which had a distinguished hump. Beltran said that he wanted his teammate to have a new nose, and even offered to pay for it.
Beltran’s words roused Niese into speaking with plastic surgeons. He went through with the procedure in October 2011 and showed up to Spring Training with a slightly straighter nose. But as Niese sees it, the true benefit is from his breathing: “It’s just so much easier for me to breathe,” Niese said. “And working out, it’s just so much easier for me.” Along with Niese’s ten pound weight loss, the Mets may be seeing great things from the left-hander.
It’s not uncommon for people to undergo nose surgery and come out with a nose that’s cosmetically improved and more functional. Breathing and sinus problems due to nose irregularities are quite common—80% of the population suffers from a deviated septum, while others have blockages deep inside their nose. Rhinoplasty to correct nose irregularities can open up the nostrils for easier breathing, which is key for a professional athlete like Niese.
Jon Niese isn’t the only cosmetically altered athlete. Mickey Rourke has had 11 reconstructive rhinoplasties in an attempt to restore his pre boxing nose, and Serena Williams is speculated to have had a nose job for aesthetic reasons.
