If you are a Chicago resident, you’re in luck. There are a number of plastic surgeons in the Chicagoland area that perform liposuction, a procedure that could reduce heart disease risk, according to a recent study.
The study shows that liposuction can do more than simply get rid of those excess fat deposits. It can also be a key defense against the number one cause of death in the United States: heart disease.
The new discovery was discussed at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ annual meeting in April 2011. Three hundred patients who were set to undergo liposuction had their blood tested, with specific attention paid to the levels of fat present in their bloodstreams. After having undergone liposuction, there was a dramatic drop in their number of triglycerides. Fat molecules, like triglycerides, are proven to raise the risk of heart disease.
Heart disease is a silent killer, but it’s also the leading cause of death in the country. An astounding 27.2 percent of all deaths within the United States in 2004 were caused by heart disease. That’s more than scaphism, setting oneself aflame and bathtub drowning combined. An unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, obesity and smoking are all known to cause heart disease but relatively healthy people are susceptible to it as well. Due to the large amount of people suffering from heart disease, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons was excited to announce that liposuction can prevent a cause of heart disease.
Liposuction is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures available, thanks to its high success rate and dramatic results. It’s primarily used to manually suck the fat out of areas of the body that are resistant to weight loss, like thighs, love handles, stomach, upper arms and buttocks. Liposuction can range from just a minor fat reduction that takes an hour to a full-body procedure for a few hours. Patients can expect to be sore, bruised and swollen for a couple of weeks.
There’s quite a range of liposuction options on the market today. The studies in this theory apply to traditional tumescent liposuction and power-assisted liposuction. Both of these types of liposuction use surgical incisions combined with suction to remove excess fat. More contemporary liposuction options like LipoDissolve are growing more popular and are quite effective, but this study applies to strictly manual liposuction only.
While there’s simply no substitute for a healthy diet and exercise, liposuction has long served as a way to get rid of excess fat. The discovery that it may also have medical benefits is a considerable plus.
