How to Boost Your Body after Bariatric Surgery

Researchers out of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons said patients who underwent laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding had reduced body mass index compared to patients who didn’t consider cosmetic surgery follow up.

Tail Freidman, chief investigator of the study and member of the ASPS, said in a recent press statement that the banding procedure performed with BCPS presents was “a safer, yet effective, option for specific high-risk patients looking for a long-term massive weight loss.”

Authored by Freidman and Itay Wiser, “Body Contouring Plastic Surgery Decreases Long-Term Body Mass Index Regain Following Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding, a Matched Retrospective Cohort Study” was recently presented at the October ASPS annual conference in Chicago.

Conducted over a 15-year period, the study of patients aged 18 to 50 showed the BMI mean endpoint was 24.6 for patients who had surgery and 31 for those who opted out of any further cosmetic operations.

According to the ASPS, gastric banding is the least effective way to achieve massive weight loss, with up to 50 percent of patients gaining all weight lost by surgery within four years.

“Recent evidence, however, suggests that plastic surgeons offer a viable tool to combat patients’ weight gain: body contouring plastic surgery,” the ASPS said in a press release.

The society of surgeons also reported that a 2013 Geneva-based study revealed that “patients who had undergone body contouring plastic surgery after the bariatric Roux-en-Y technique demonstrate[d] improved long-term weight control in comparison to those patients who did not.”

After losing a significant amount of weight, the skin and muscles are loose, leaving a less than appealing appearance. Though diet and exercise is the optimal way to tighten and tone after trimming down, plastic surgery is often an added option to keep up the incentive to look good.

Transferring fat and adding implants may give the body its natural bounce back, but diet and exercise must follow for anyone to keep fit. Patients who have had a little help getting rid of love handles by gastric banding must use their own will to keep weight off regardless of any body contouring procedures.

From tummy tucks to breast and buttocks implants, plastic surgery gives patients a second chance at self esteem. Everyone needs a little boost sometimes, and following gastric bypass, body contouring surgery could be just the thing to give you that little lift.
