Like it or not, the Barbie doll has come to symbolize American female beauty – in an 11.5 inch, plastic version. Plastic surgery aims to improve a patient’s appearance, but there are women who literally want to look like a human Barbie doll. Among them is Ukrainian model Valeria Lukyanova, 30, who has earned the nickname “Human Barbie.” She doesn’t care for the term, but she’s quite open about her extensive plastic surgery.
Lukyanova’s before and after photos are quite bizarre. Some, she admits, are photoshopped. In many pictures, her face looks less like Barbie’s and more like one of the big-eyed dolls influenced by artist Margaret Keane. Her sculptured body is completely Barbiesque – large bust, miniscule waist, and completely toned limbs.
Lukyanova claims she is now tired of her human Barbie look. Her new ambition is to appear like the Queen of the Amazon, or her version of that legendary figure.
Lukyanova says she doesn’t appreciate all the attention paid to her looks – uh huh. She says “people must look past the superficial” because that’s the “real” her. She says she should be evaluated on her soul, not on her more obvious external qualities. While the only thing most people know about her is that she’s undergone multiple surgeries to look like a doll, she’s also a writer, opera singer and has a bachelor’s degree in architecture. She subsists on a vegetarian liquid diet, which may account for her wasp-like waist. She denies having ribs removed to achieve that tiny waist.
Characters like Lukyanova don’t do plastic surgery any favors. The “plastic” in these types of procedures doesn’t refer to making patients look like a children’s toy. “Fake” is not the appearance the overwhelming majority of plastic surgery candidates want. The emphasis is on looking natural, but better. Most people do not want “You’ve had work done” as an acquaintance’s initial reaction when seeing them post-surgery. Plastic surgery junkies seek attention. If it weren’t plastic surgery, something else would certainly take its place for them.
Plastic surgery can change your appearance and your life for the better. It gives you confidence, and can make you feel sexier and vibrant. It’s a shame some people see it only as an avenue to make a spectacle of themselves.
