Hi again and welcome to the September Cosmetic Surgery Newsletter, brought to you by SignatureForum. Although most of us are disappointed this time of year by the end of summer and beach season, some people are glad for the opportunity to hide their body issues under a protective shroud of bulky fabric again. Women are more commonly thought of as having these insecurities about their physical form, but men certainly have their own self image challenges to deal with. High among them is the often embarrassing development of oversized male mammary glands, leading to a condition called Gynecomastia.
Understanding Gynecomastia
Many guys appreciate the way a woman's curves fill out a sweater, but they don't appreciate it so much when their own curves start to compete with their girlfriend's. Greater awareness of men's cosmetic needs has made their presence at the surgeon's office commonplace. In fact, the percentage of plastic surgery consumers that are male continues to rise. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the number of cosmetic surgical procedures performed on men increased 17 percent from 2006 to 2007. One of the top five surgical procedures undergone by this growing male clientele was gynecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction.
Treating the Condition
Gynecomastia surgery is a highly effective way to treat men with enlarged breasts. Increased knowledge and improved techniques continue to lower the involved risks, but your doctor should still explain all possible risks to you before performing the surgery. An in-depth consultation with a surgeon will establish the best way to complete the male breast reduction surgery, while achieving the individual results you're looking for.
The two main surgical techniques for male breast reduction are liposuction and excision. Liposuction can easily and effectively remove excess fatty tissue, while excision is used when there's an excess of skin or glandular breast tissue. Sometimes both techniques are used to successfully correct the gynecomastia and to create a more attractive, masculine contour for the chest.
Recovery times for male breast reduction surgery may differ from patient to patient, but most recipients are back to their normal routine in less than two weeks; sporting a fitter, more macho physique to boot! This winter, don't hide by slouching back into that dingy sweatshirt. Gynecomastia surgery can have you walking tall and proud through to the summer, when you can finally bare it at the beach with confidence.
