2010 was another banner year in the world of cosmetic enhancement and plastic surgery, with exciting new developments in the field and numerous headline-generating stories in the media (some more positive than others). So before we ring in the new year and all the new stories that 2011 will surely bring, let’s take a moment to reflect on some of the biggest cosmetic and plastic surgery stories of 2010.

1. Heidi Montag’s Plastic Surgery Overload: After receiving a whopping 10 plastic-surgery procedures in one day, Heidi Montag publicly revealed her brand-new body on the cover of People Magazine in January. The 23-year-old reality star underwent a complete transformation, getting everything from a chin augmentation and Botox injections to butt augmentation and breast enhancement. Since then, Montag has been plastered on the covers of numerous tabloids and appeared on television claiming she wanted to look like Barbie. But after much ridicule from the press and her family—as well as the limitations her new body has put on her—it seems as if Montag may be regretting her decision, and has even considered reducing the size of her breasts down to a double D. We’re curious to see what this plastic surgery addict will do next.

2. Heidi Montag’s Plastic Surgeon Dies in Car Crash: In August, Dr. Frank Ryan, plastic surgeon to the stars, was involved in a fatal car accident that took his life. While he had performed many procedures for various celebrities, he was most well-known for the 10-hour operation on Heidi Montag that had sparked so much interest just months earlier. In fact, Dr. Ryan received criticism for allowing Montag to go through with the surgery. The incident damaged what had been a stellar reputation for Ryan as one of Hollywood's most trusted plastic surgeons. His untimely death, however, put the spotlight back on the man himself and his more positive exploits.

3. Sarah Palin’s Alleged Breast Augmentation: The former Vice-Presidential nominee was reported to have undergone breast augmentation when she showed up at the Belmont Stakes in June showing of a perkier bust. Pictures of Palin's supposedly enhanced chest at the event popped up in news outlets and tabloids everywhere with people buzzing if she did or didn’t. The former Alaska governor has neither confirmed nor denied these rumors, and it is unknown whether this new figure will help or hurt Palin’s political aspirations.

4. Zerona vs. Zeltiq: Both cosmetic treatments have been featured on Dr. Oz,The Doctors and plenty of national news channels, but many are still curious about their amazing capabilities and whether or not they really work. After causing quite a stir among the cosmetic surgery world, Zerona and Zeltiq have become the go-to solution for people who want to undergo body contouring treatments without the use of scalpels, suction tubes or anesthesia. These non-surgical fat-reduction treatments have grown increasingly popular during 2010, making them noteworthy news in our opinion.

5. Kim Kardashian’s Botox Freakout:Rounding out our list is Kim Kardashian’s Botox injections caught on tape. During the filming of an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kim was seen receiving Botox to treat the nearly invisible lines around her eyes. After the treatment, she experienced bruising and pain—normal side effects of the injectable. Kim, however, had not done her research and thought something was seriously wrong. In the end, everything was fine, and Kim admitted to her lack of knowledge before getting Botox. Other than a truly entertaining reality TV moment, Kim provided us with a shining example of what not to do when it comes to cosmetic surgery.

There are a number of other entertaining and interesting plastic surgery stories that occurred over the last year, and we wish we could mention them all. This year has given us some truly great advancements in the field of cosmetic surgery, as well as some memorable celebrity moments. Now we bid a fond farewell to 2010 and are ready to embrace all that 2011 has to offer.
