Plastic surgery doesn’t just improve appearance. It also raises confidence and self-esteem. College students who want to look and feel better via plastic surgery have a relatively limited time frame in which to do it, since major surgery can take up to six weeks to heal, and that’s not an option when taking classes. Summer has become that transitional phase, when the student caterpillar has the time to turn into a butterfly before school starts.
Trends in plastic surgery come and go, but for young people seeking a big change in their appearance, rhinoplasty has led the way for decades. A nose job, however, does take the full six weeks to heal, so plastic surgeons are often booked for such procedures in the late spring and early part of the summer, when patients can afford the time sacrifice. Most surgeons will not perform a nose job on anyone less than 16 years of age, because prior to that the bones of the face may not have reached their full growth.
Recovery from any surgery is tough, and rhinoplasty is no exception. In some ways, it is even more difficult, since the face is on display while procedures done in other areas can remain hidden. Expect swelling and bruising for a few weeks post-surgery. That may mean spending much of the summer indoors and avoiding an active social life. It also means limiting exercise, which is hard on patients who love to work out.
Once the swelling subsides at the six week mark, patients will have a good idea of what their new nose look like. However, it can take six months to a year for the nose to achieve its final shape. If any type of revision is necessary, it is not performed until after the one year anniversary, as the surgeon will not know how the nose truly appears until after that time. For most patients, the new nose takes a bit of getting used to, especially if it makes a transformational difference in their appearance.
It’s critical that students have realistic expectations of what their new nose can do for them. It is supposed to make them more attractive. It does not mean they will instantly become more popular and have more dates than they can handle. A new nose may improve the face, but is it up to the student to improve their temperaments.
