Since the Season 4 Netflix premiere of the cult television show Arrested Development, the Internet is buzzing about actress Portia de Rossi. The beautiful Aussie reprised her iconic role as Lindsay Bluth Fünke, but according to some, her appearance onscreen is radically different than in recent press photos and interviews. Everyone seems to be asking, has de Rossi “made a huge mistake” and had cosmetic surgery?
What exactly has happened to Portia de Rossi? The media seem to be as confused as the audience. In a recent statement released by E! Online, a close source claims that “She’s absolutely not had plastic surgery. Her character is clearing wearing a wig, which ended up altering her entire look.” And while de Rossi certainly does look different with her wig, one has to wonder what she looks like without one and whether she has also received plastic surgery at all. In response to the rumors, de Rossi told People Magazine, “The trick for me turning 40 was to really evaluate what I wanna do with this next phase in my life. The one thing I don't wanna do is chase what I looked like at 20.”
With no easy answers, people have reverted to elaborate speculation. Certain Arrested Development fans have even wondered if the wig and physical changes are plot-driven or a joke in reference to de Rossi’s (and Lindsay Bluth Fünke’s) advocacy for charitable organizations. What is known is de Rossi supports Locks of Love, a group that provides human hair wigs for children suffering from hair loss due to alopecia and illnesses. If de Rossi has gotten plastic surgery, will it somehow affect her character or characterization on the series? Whatever the case, both de Rossi and creator/showrunner Mitch Hurwitiz are keeping mum about the TV mom.
Regardless of what has actually happened, Portia de Rossi has defended her right to control her image. As she told People Magazine, “As women we’re so conditioned to think that beauty and age are very important that you stay kind of youthful in order to be beautiful. I don’t think it’s fair for people to think that women are just vain because they’re worried about getting older. It’s actually really linked in with a lot of very primitive stuff for women.” Regardless, de Rossi’s changes, cosmetically or otherwise, are causing a surge of public interest in cosmetic surgery.
