Wall Street Banker Tells Oprah How Plastic Surgery Boosted Her Career

Wall Street Banker Tells Oprah How Plastic Surgery Boosted Her Career

At its most basic and intrinsic level, the purpose of plastic surgery is to improve a patient’s physical aesthetic. Ideally, a little nip and tuck at the waist or a set of breast implants will boost a patient’s confidence and lift their spirits. But sometimes, plastic surgery reaps positive benefits in other aspects of a patient’s life— such as their career.

One story that’s been receiving a lot of attention recently is that of a woman who wrote an anonymous letter to Oprah Winfrey. The letter detailed the woman’s extensive plastic surgery work (ten, to be exact) and how her new look had remarkably improved her career on Wall Street. Click on the names of the procedures to learn more about what this 55-year old investment banker had done:

The above procedures are some of the most popular surgeries a patient can choose to have done, ranging from the less invasive (lip injections) to the ones that probably took her a couple of weeks to recover from (tummy tuck). The woman’s first plastic surgery procedure was her breasts, which she had augmented when she was 24 years old. She said she had that surgery plus liposuction after getting divorced and needing a pick-me-up. After these two surgeries, her personal and career life saw a major shift.

How Plastic Surgery Changed Her Life and Career

“Not only did my romantic options explode, but my career instantly shifted into a higher gear,” said the woman. “I was suddenly being courted by senior partners, included in meetings with the CEOs and CFOs of current and prospective clients. I thought, ‘Wait a minute—I'm the same person I was before the surgeries.’ But now I looked like a bombshell in addition to being really good at my work, and it definitely opened up more opportunities. That's when I began to think of the surgeries as an asset and an investment.”

When asked about the cost effectiveness of her many surgeries, the woman explained her decisions using her obvious finance background. “My recent facelift stemmed from a conversation I had with my CFO about our financial projections. He advised me that in the long run, it's critical to allocate adequate resources to asset maintenance. I can tell you that he got no argument from me.”

The woman went on to admit that although the surgeries had certainly raised her confidence level, she took the reactions to her new look with a grain of salt. “Having a killer body gave me a kind of confidence I'd never had. But the way men reacted to me after my first surgery was the way I thought people would treat me if I had suddenly become famous. It was clear the reaction had nothing to do with who I really am. I'm not as vulnerable as I was before my surgeries, and I'm more careful about who I choose to be with. I choose people who love me for me.”

The critics have been quick to react to this woman’s startling confession. Many anonymous commenters have called her “superficial” and “sad.” But based on her concise answers to the complicated questions regarding her plastic surgery, this woman appears to actually have her head on straight. Her choice to get plastic surgery has brought her success in the working world, but she seems unphased by people who treat her differently in personal relationships.
