Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman, 49, has been a movie star for 28 years, since her breakout role in 1989’s “Dead Calm.” As the half-century mark approaches, she still looks young, with smooth, wrinkle-free skin. Is that the result of plastic surgery? Social media was recently in an uproar over Kidman’s appearance at the Goldene Kamera Awards in Hamburg, Germany, just a week after she and husband Keith Urban were on the hand at the Academy Awards. There’s no question something happened to her in the previous six days. At the Oscars, her face was lean and chiseled. In Germany, puffiness was the order of the day. So, did Kidman have something minimally invasive done in the meantime? Six days isn’t sufficient to recover from any major plastic surgery.
Kidman fesses up to having tried Botox in the past, but claims she didn’t care for it and hasn’t used it again. Kidman was quoted as saying, “I didn’t like how my face looked afterwards. Now I don’t use it anymore and can move my forehead.”
When a movie star is suspected of having plastic surgery, it’s not merely armchair experts putting into their two cents. Real experts opined that Kidman’s look was the result of dermal fillers – although presumably not Botox, if she dislikes it so much. Weight gain could cause such facial filling, but Kidman would have eaten an awful lot in a week’s time for that to be the case. A Sydney-based surgeon described Kidman’s look as “pillow face,” adding that it’s a not uncommon result of having too much in the way of fillers injected. This plastic surgeon speculated the fillers were meant to add volume to the cheekbones and lips, but the effect was overblown.
Of course, there’s always the possibility that Kidman’s swollen face resulted from a medical issue. Facial puffiness is technically known as “facial edema.” Too much drinking can cause puffiness, but Kidman isn’t known for excess alcohol consumption. A low-grade fever can cause facial swelling, as can an allergic reaction. A salty or fatty meal shortly before her red carpet appearance could also contribute to facial edema.
Fans will just have to wait until Kidman’s next major appearance and see whether slim-faced or chubby-cheeked Nicole shows up. One thing is certain – she looks fabulous for nearly 50.
