Blame Kylie Jenner if you want to, but nowadays lips seem to be on everyone's minds. Only a couple of years ago, if you wanted fuller, more amazing lips, your only options were injectable fillers. While certainly effective, fillers have their downsides, which left people searching to find a more reliable alternative. That alternative has now arrived in the form of lip lifts, which are currently one of the most popular trends in the world of cosmetic enhancement.
We've all heard of face lifts, breast lifts and even butt lifts. So what exactly is a lip lift? Lip lifts are a fairly straightforward, minor cosmetic surgery that shortens the gap between the top of the lips and the bottom of the nose. The procedure involves removing a portion of the skin from just below the nostrils, which leaves the lips looking curvier, crisper and enhancing their overall appearance. In general, the process takes less than an hour, only requires local anesthesia, and doesn't lead to significant downtime, although two weeks of noticeable swelling is typically expected.
While lip lifts are just now gaining a newfound popularity, the procedure has actually been around for years. Until recently, they were used on older patients, typically as part of an all-around face lift. Since the skin between the nose and the mouth sags over time, older patients historically have had more need for the operation. But times have changed, and plastic surgeons around the country are reporting that patients in their twenties and thirties are now asking specifically for lip lifts.
One of the reasons for this rise in popularity is that lip lifts offer some advantages over fillers. First and foremost, it's a one-time procedure, whereas injectables need to be repeated several times throughout the year. Along with these injections comes an inconsistency in appearance. Not only do fillers fade with time, but all injections may not lead to the exact same results. A lip lift procedure, on the other hand, is a long-term solution that gives your lips the same enhanced look month after month, year after year.
If a lip lift sounds like something you may want for yourself, be forewarned that there are some potential downsides. The biggest one is the cost. Depending on where you get the procedure done and the doctor that performs it, a lip lift can set you back between $2,000 and $8,000. Also, lip lifts pose a more significant risk. If you go with a cosmetic surgeon that isn't an expert on the muscles and skin of the face, then you could wind up with a botched procedure, which will cause a much bigger headache than an injectable mishap.
