According to recent numbers from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more and more men are looking to go under the knife. In fact, the number of male plastic surgery patients has risen almost 30% since the year 2000, and more than 1.3 million men underwent cosmetic enhancement in 2017 alone. So what is suddenly driving men to get these kinds of procedures done and what are doctors doing to accommodate them?
This dramatic uptick in male clientele hasn't gone unnoticed by plastic surgeons. Throughout the United States, a majority of cosmetic surgeons have started to market their procedures more directly to men, plastering their social media pages with before and after pictures of men getting work done. In some cases, doctors have even gone so far as to open male-only practices or extensions onto existing offices, allowing a more comfortable space for men to come in for consultations and have work done.
When it comes to cosmetic surgery, men have mostly been getting the same kinds of procedures as their female counterparts. Based on the most recent numbers from the ASPS, nose reshaping was the most popular procedure last year, with over 52,000 procedures for men. In second was eyelid surgery at a little over 30,000, followed by liposuction at a little below 30,000. Coming in fourth was male breast reduction at around 26,000, and hair transplant procedures rounded out the top five with just over 14,000.
In general, most men see cosmetic enhancement is a sound investment in their own futures. Studies have shown that employees who are seen as old or out of touch start to see a decrease in their relative earning potential. Plastic surgery represents a way to turn back the clock and allow older men to compete with their younger coworkers and remain relevant in the workforce for longer. To that end, it's not just surgical procedures that men are taking advantage of. Over the last decade and a half, filler injections among men have nearly doubled, and Botox injections have quadrupled.
Although the surge in men undergoing plastic surgery is impressive, they still don't hold a candle to women. According to the numbers, more than 90% of the plastic surgery clients last year were women, and while male interest in plastic surgery has increased 30% since 2000, the number for women has increased by more than 120%. So men have still got a lot of catching up to do, but as more of them discover the benefits of plastic surgery, their numbers will continue to climb.
