Male Plastic Surgery Numbers Continue to Grow

The American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) released its annual report this month detailing last year's plastic surgery trends. Even though plastic surgery is only up by 2% overall, ASAPS found that men were having significantly more plastic surgery than before. Men's facelifts rose by 14% in 2010 and ear surgery by 11%. Other procedures that gained popularity are nose jobs, eyelid surgery, and the less invasive BOTOX®.

Health is arguably more important to American society than ever. Well, that statement can't be verified-- but it's hard not to notice that health food, once confined to mom and pop specialty grocers, has made its way mainstream onto the shelves of your regular neighborhood grocery store. Whole Foods has grown astronomically in the last ten years and now operates a sort of health mecca with about fifteen subsidiary companies. Likewise, gym memberships have increased by 23% since 2001. With healthy lifestyles abound, it seems as though people not only want to be healthy on the inside-- they want to look the part, too.

That means that a little nip and tuck is becoming progressively more acceptable for men. "Typically people think of celebrities and high profile men going under the knife," said Dr. Stephen Baker, a board-certified plastic surgeon and member of ASAPS in Washington DC. "And while that may be true, the typical male cosmetic surgery patient that I see is an average guy who wants to look as good as he feels. Most of my patients are 'men's men,' the kind of guy you might not think would have plastic surgery," Dr. Baker told Science Daily.

Joe Marek, 57, is a patient of Dr. Baker and explains why he got the surgery: "I didn't feel that old. I felt young. I was working out. I was pretty active and I wanted to look like I felt inside," he said simply.

Not that stigmas surrounding plastic surgery don't still exist. Some people automatically associate plastic surgery with a look that's unnatural or frozen. But that's exactly what male plastic surgery clients don't want, according to Dr. David McDaniel, director of the Virgina-based Institute of Anti-Aging Research.

"You want people to think you look really good, really rested, like you're eating all your fruits and veggies," McDaniel told Forbes. "You don't want people to think, 'I wonder who did his Botox?'"

Speaking of Botox, it's now the most popular minimally invasive procedure for men. In 2010, 337,000 injections were given to men, and it's easy to see why. Botox is a low maintenance way to look younger: there's no downtime, the results are immediate, and it's one of the most affordable options in the realm of plastic surgery. Men like that they can walk into a clinic and walk out thirty minutes later, looking like themselves but refreshed. Many male Botox enthusiasts initially get into the filler due to encouragement from their wives who are already fans. And those men end up going to the same plastic surgeon as their wives, since they've seen the results firsthand.

Pile that on top of competitive work atmospheres and you've got a serious market for male plastic surgery. That's right: more and more men are citing their career as their reason for going under the knife.

"In the corporate world, there's a lot of emphasis on image, and image goes with self-confidence," says Dr. Antonio Armani, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon. "I think a lot of people do invest money in improving their looks because they feel this is one way they can go up the corporate ladder."

Can being more attractive actually affect your career? Of course it can, says Dr. Armani. It goes back to that whole overall fuel for men's plastic surgery: to look healthier. Since a youthful appearance is associated with health, men worry that their company's twenty-something new hires are a threat to their own positions. Glowing skin and a thick head of hair will put you on their level, aesthetically speaking. It's not such a far cry from the expected office garb of an ironed button-down and shined shoes.
