Kylie Jenner recently told the world via Instagram that she is finished with lip fillers. The 20 year old told a commenter that her altered appearance was due to lip filler elimination. In 2015, the then-teenage Jenner admitted she had temporary fillers in her lips but not permanent or injectable fillers. She wasn’t a billionaire back in 2015 like she is now – maybe the cost made her think twice? That’s a joke, by the way. Jenner also announced via an interview with big sister Kim Kardashian West, 37, that she’s not seeking any type of cosmetic procedures at this time.
Temporary fillers, which do wear off over time as the name implies, must be reapplied every six to 12 months. The procedure, which may run up to $3,000, requires only an office visit. If necessary, the patient may receive local anesthesia so that the process is completely painless. While temporary filler is removable, most people who tire of it simply wait for it to disappear on its own. Jenner didn’t make it clear whether she had the fillers or removed or just didn’t return for regular maintenance, but a dermatologist who doesn’t treat Jenner says it’s likely the latter. This doctor adds that patients who want to get rid of their temporary fillers can do so by having their healthcare provider inject an enzyme into the lips, which dissolves the hyaluronic acid that makes up the fillers. The doctor noted this type of removal isn’t available for the permanent version of fillers.
The downside of using temporary fillers and deciding not to keep up with them is that the lips may never return to their natural state. While the lips get smaller over time after the use of temporary fillers stops, the lips will only return to about 75 percent of their former state, at best. Doctors must ensure that patients understand that a “temporary” lip filler can permanently alter the look of the lips, even years after maintenance has ended. There’s another serious issue with temporary lip fillers, in that too many procedures of this type can result in lip scarring. Because of this, it’s crucial that patients visit board-certified plastic surgeons to have such procedures done, and not be fooled by the “temporary” designation of such lip fillers. Even so-called cosmetic procedures are medical procedures in reality, and must be taken seriously.
