For years, celebrities did everything they could to keep their forays into cosmetic enhancement a secret. In the age of social media, however, all of that started to change. As stars got the ability to control their own stories, and as plastic surgery procedures became more commonplace, many high-profile celebrities have taken to openly speaking about the work they've had done, sometimes going into great detail about the surgical process as well as what led to their decision to take the plastic surgery plunge.
In recent weeks, Julie Chen, host of "Big Brother" and co-host of "The Talk" has been in the news due to her husband, Les Moonves, being accused of sexual assault by various women. Chen has made headlines by uncompromisingly standing beside her husband, but only five years ago, Chen was making headlines of a different sort. After old images began to circulate of Chen, showing her looking significantly different than she does every day on television, the media star decided to speak out and tell her own plastic surgery story, and it's a story that is markedly different from most other ones that we've heard.
According to Chen, she decided to undergo plastic surgery early in her career after getting significant pressure from a high-profile agent as well as her news director at the time. These men were of the opinion that Chen's Chinese appearance would hold her back in her career. If she truly wanted to reach the big time, she would need to get plastic surgery to reduce the prominence of some of her Asian features. Although she was reluctant to do it, Chen eventually agreed.
The procedure in question was what's known as a blepharoplasty. In short, this procedure alters the appearance of the eyelids, and in Chen's case it was used to make her eyes appear bigger and more wide open. While the procedure may or may not have helped with her career, the decision to alter her appearance did create waves with certain members of Chen's family, and while she hasn't gone so far as to say she regrets getting the blepharoplasty, Chen does say it's a decision she has to live with every day of her life.
Even though Chen's story is focused around race, the underlining themes of it are stunningly common. By her own admission, Chen was a naive up-and-comer who did what she thought was necessary to reach the next stage of her career. This same sentiment could be expressed by dozens of actresses and media personalities who have felt pressure to change the way they look, either subtly or dramatically. Hopefully, as society continues to broaden and diversify its definitions of beauty, stories like this will become less and less common.
