In a true tribute to Joan Rivers, Girls creator Lena Dunham tweeted one last jab at the trailblazing albeit irreverent comedian, who never thought it too soon to crack a joke at another’s expense.
“Watching Joan Rivers do standup at age 81 was incredible: athletic, jaw-dropping, terrifying, essential. It never stopped. Neither will she,” Dunham tweeted. “I told Maron I’d have a zinger when Joan died. But I didn’t think she ever would. She felt eternal and anyway, zingers are her territory. That being said, Joan is gone but a piece of her lives on: her nose, because it’s made of polyurethane.”
Rivers experienced serious complications and stopped breathing during a routine throat surgery procedure at a Manhattan based clinic on August 28. She was then taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and put into a medically induced coma after suffering cardiac arrest.
Her daughter Melissa Rivers said she had been placed on life support on Tuesday and moved out of intensive care on Wednesday. Melissa confirmed her death early Thursday afternoon. The State Health Department is investigating the circumstances that led to her death.
Rivers was best known, especially in recent years, for her sharp wit, fashion commentary and embrace of plastic surgery. The star was very open about the dozens of plastic surgery procedures she had undergone over the years. She first received an eye lift in 1965 in an attempt to further her career and became an ongoing patient of plastic surgeon Steven Hoefflin in 1983.
The Fashion Police host joked about having more than 700 procedures done. While she hadn’t quite undergone that many, she did admit to receiving a number of Botox injections, nose jobs, liposuction and a few face lifts. Some argued that her plastic surgery work looked overdone, but that never stopped Rivers.
“She’s a piece of work in a good way,” Dr. Anthony Youn, a board-certified plastic surgeon, regular on the Rachel Ray Show and writer behind the popular Celeb Cosmetic Surgery blog, told CBS News.
