Jessica Lange burst onto the screen in Dino de Laurentiis’ 1976 remake of King Kong. Forty-one years later, she’s playing Joan Crawford to Susan Sarandon’s Bette Davis in Feud. The 68 year old Lange looks terrific, but does the Minnesota native owe her graceful aging to her Nordic genes or has plastic surgery helped? Lange remains mum on the subject, but the actress is outspoken on the subject of women and aging in Hollywood – she doesn’t think it’s changed much since the days of Crawford and Davis, when the two great stars found themselves doing the 1962 B picture, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?
Photos of Lange taken back in 1994 compared with recent pictures seem to support the plastic surgery rumors. Twenty-three years ago, Lange already had noticeable frown lines between her brows. These days, they are less obvious, so Botox is likely involved. It’s possible she’s also had a brow lift. While facelift rumors also circulate, if she’s had this done the result is quite natural looking. Her face is still animated when she speaks – and acts – and there’s none of the obvious tightness sometimes affecting older women with facelifts.
A 2012 article in Britain’s Daily Mail lauded then-62 year old Lange as “Aging Gracefully: Jessica Lange proves that not all actresses rely on Botox as she shows off her naturally flawless complexion.” Those red carpet photos show a woman who looks good for 62, but certainly can’t pass for much younger. Her lines and wrinkles are on display, and she looks like she’s proud of having earned every one of them. One thing’s for certain – she’s kept her figure and it doesn’t look like her size has changed since she was King Kong’s girlfriend.
No matter whether or not she’s undergone cosmetic procedures – and actresses far younger have had much more done – Jessica Lange is working as hard and as much as she did in her 20s and 30s. Besides her work on FX’s American Horror Story, she appeared on Broadway last year in an acclaimed version of Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey into Night. Next up is starring alongside Naomi Waits in The Lonely Doll, scheduled to start filming this spring. Since her 1976 debut, Lange has worked continuously in film, TV and on the stage, and looked terrific in every era and medium.
