Pop superstar Iggy Azalea has never been shy about sharing her thoughts with the world. In fact, it is that penchant for honesty and openness that drives fans to her music. Recently, however, the Australian rapper's directness raised eyebrows around the world as she gave a shout-out to her plastic surgeon on his birthday.
Azalea's plastic surgeon, Dr. Ashkan Ghavami, has been getting a lot of love from the songstress over the last year. In several interviews, Azalea has spoken openly about the cosmetic enhancement she's had done on her breasts and nose, but the birthday message was the most overt she has been about the good doctor's work.
In her Instagram shout-out, Azalea lovingly referred to her doctor as "Ash" and praised his immense talent as a plastic surgeon. But beyond that, Azalea also raved about Dr. Ghavam's philosophy when it comes to cosmetic enhancement. According to Azalea's post, her surgeon is supportive of women who choose to be proactive about changing their appearance and getting the look that they want.
Years ago, celebrity plastic surgery was relegated to rumor and whispers, but that has changed dramatically. Recently, TV stars such as Ariel Winter and Kaley Cuoco have openly talked about their forays into cosmetic enhancement. Similarly, the stars of "Keeping up With the Kardashians" and the "Teen Mom" franchise have given us a front row seat to their procedures.
Pulling back the curtain in this way has demystified the practice of cosmetic enhancement and led to it being more culturally accepted. Specifically, there have been major strides made in the philosophy that Azalea mentions in her message: using plastic surgery as a tool for personal empowerment.
In this day and age, with cosmetic enhancement becoming more affordable and the results being largely naturalistic, it makes sense to remove the negative stigma. Since the practice is more widely available for everyone, there is no reason that young women and men should simply live with aspects of their appearance that they're unhappy with, especially when plastic surgery can offer an easy remedy.
In this context, Iggy Azalea's message is about a lot more than just saying thank you to her plastic surgeon. It's an acknowledgment that nobody – not even celebrities – are born looking as glamorous as they do on television or on the cover of magazines. Therefore, there is nothing wrong with anybody using cosmetic enhancement to change their appearance for the better.
