Over the last few years, the market for vaginal plastic surgery has skyrocketed in aesthetic clinics across the country. As one of the fastest growing cosmetic procedures in the U.S., vaginal rejuvenation is an option for women who for one reason or another, wish to change the look or makeup of their most intimate parts. Some women choose vaginoplasty for functional reasons, like to make bike riding easier or to keep a stretched labia from falling out of high-cut underwear. Certain forms of vaginal rejuvenation can even tighten the vagina for increased sexual pleasure. And in a society where vaginal beautification is becoming more and more common, many women choose vaginal rejuvenation simply to improve the outer appearance of their lady parts.
Now that the art of vaginal rejuvenation has been around for a few years, some more “nichey” procedures involving the vagina have developed. The “designer vagina” trend includes the following procedures:
Rim Labiaplasty. This is the most popular form of labiaplasty to date. If a woman finds that her inner lips protrude too much outside the vagina, this procedure will trim the lips so that they better “fit” into the overall aesthetic of the vagina. The inner lips are still visible after a rim labiaplasty, and are about even with the outer lips. Cosmetic enhancement aside, rim labiaplasty is a popular choice for women who find that their inner labia gets in the way during sex or physical activity. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia using surgical tools or lasers.
Barbie Labiaplasty The Barbie Labiaplasty is the most extensive aesthetic labial procedure available. It’s a little controversial—some people say it enables a “porn aesthetic”—but increasingly popular nonetheless. During Barbie Labiaplasty, the inner lips are excised to the point that they are barely visible. The result is a vagina that looks refined, neat, and small. Some plastic surgeons say that after a Barbie Labiaplasty, a patient’s vagina will look like similar to a clamshell: the outer labia looks sealed together, with no inner labia protrusion.
This non-vaginal procedure removes anal skin tags that have developed as a result of hemorrhoids or other disorders. The anal skin tag occurs when the inside of the anus becomes inverted and visible from the outside. Removing the skin tag can be done with either a laser or a surgical incision in under an hour.
For patients that don’t want to go under the knife but want to enhance the look of their girly bits, non-surgical labial rejuvenation is an ideal choice. An injectable filler like Juverderm puffs up the outer labia. Extracted body fat can also be injected for more long-lasting results. The result is a genital area that looks younger, less saggy, and more protrusive.
Hymenoplasty is another vaginal rejuvenation procedure that just doesn’t sit well with some people. The hymen is a thin membrane inside the vagina that is naturally torn during intercourse or other physical activity. The breaking of the hymen is mildly painful and often associated with the loss of a female’s virginity. A hymenoplasty rebuilds that membrane—but only until it’s broken again.
