With greater access to qualified surgeons and an overall lowering of prices, cosmetic enhancement has become a ubiquitous practice. Unfortunately, the newfound normalcy of plastic surgery has led to a handful of negative consequences. So if you're thinking about getting a minimally invasive injection or going under the knife for major cosmetic surgery, here are some things to keep in mind.

Cosmetic Surgeons are Not Miracle Workers

Cosmetic enhancement has come a long way over the years, and with modern techniques, doctors can achieve amazing results that look almost entirely natural. But plastic surgeons still have limitations.

No matter what procedure you're considering, your doctor should provide you with a reasonable list of expectations. These include not only the aesthetic look that can be achieved post-surgery, but also the potential downsides of a procedure gone wrong. If you want results that your surgeon says he or she can't deliver, then don't go through with the procedure and assume a miracle will occur. Keep your expectations reasonable and trust your doctor's expertise.

Not All Doctors Are on Your Side

Having trust in your doctor is good, but that trust needs to be earned. Sadly, the money rolling in from cosmetic enhancement has led to some people in the medical field trying to take advantage of unsuspecting patients. Even though there are regulations in place, these rules haven't stopped some doctors from performing procedures that they're not qualified to perform.

Whether you're seeking a minimally invasive procedure, such as Botox or dermal fillers, or major surgery, make sure you do your homework and find a certified practitioner. Check out your potential doctor's website and look at patient reviews. By making sure that your physician is properly qualified, you can hopefully minimize the risk of a negative outcome, and you can also get a better understanding of your doctor's surgical abilities.

No matter how normalized cosmetic enhancement has become, remember that these are still serious medical procedures. Mishaps do occur, and patients have experienced serious consequences from even routine treatments. So be an informed patient and think through all aspects of your chosen procedure. It's important to have an ideal look in mind, but it's equally important to understand what your surgeon can achieve and to be realistic about the outcome.
