Remember your softball coach’s advice? “Keep your eye on the ball”? Well, perhaps you ought to keep your eye on the bat as well. Jean Carlos Enrique Segura, the Dominican professional baseball infielder for the Milwaukee Brewers of Major League Baseball, recently had a nasty incident, and has learned his lesson the hard way.
The not yet 25 year old ballplayer had to abruptly leave Saturday night’s ball game against the Chicago Cubs due to a freak accident concerning a baseball bat. According to reports (and ESPN’s endless slow-motion recaps), American baseball right fielder and fellow Milwaukee Brewer Ryan Joseph Braun hit Mr. Enrique Segura hit the head with a bat.
The accident was exactly that, an accident. Apparently the 30 year old Ryan Joseph Braun was taking practice swings in the dugout and unwittingly (emphasis on “unwit”) smashed the face of his fellow teammate. According to Tom Haudricourt, Brewers beat writer for Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, while Segura does not have a concussion or a fracture, he will need reconstructive plastic surgery to repair a deep gash near his right eye. Talk about a strike out.
Thankfully and no doubt for all those concerned, Enrique Segura does not have a concussion or fracture. With any luck, Segura will hopefully be back to playing America’s pastime in no time. However, doctors are providing no timetable for his return at this time. 27 year old Jeffrey "Jeff" Thomas Bianchi will fill in at shortstop and has no doubt promised to duck from any incoming bats.
