When we think about plastic surgery, we usually think about people cosmetically enhancing parts of their body with which they're dissatisfied. And to be sure, the vast majority of plastic surgery is done with this goal in mind. Last year alone, nearly 16 million procedures were performed in the United States, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and almost all of them were typical, run-of-the-mill types of procedures -- Botox injections, liposuctions, breast augmentations and dermal fillers.
But then there are the outliers, the specialized requests that leave even the most seasoned cosmetic surgeons scratching their heads. So what are some of these odd requests? Here are four of the weirdest procedures that doctors have been asked to perform.
Sure, we've all fantasized about what it would be like to fly, but a surprising number of people try to take this fantasy to the next level. According to numerous cosmetic doctors, surgically attached wings is a fairly common request. In fact, there are even rumors that a few scientists are working on ways to attach working wings to people's backs.
For a show whose original run only last three seasons, "Star Trek" has had remarkable staying power. Fans of the show and its numerous spin-offs are notoriously passionate, which has led to several of them requesting ear enhancements to make them look like Spock. By simply making the tops of the ears pointy, plastic surgeons can fulfill these fans' dreams of looking like their favorite Vulcan.
Liposuction has been a staple of cosmetic enhancement for decades, but recently patients have started to ask for very targeted liposuction. One of the more popular requests is to get rid of excess fat around the ankles. After all, why suffer through life having "cankles" when you don't have to?
Why would anybody care about getting rid of something as benign as a belly button? As it turns out, it's actually a fairly common request. For some, the stated reason is so that they can look like a clone, while others just want their stomach to be as flat and unblemished as possible. Either way, belly button removal is a procedure that many doctors get asked to perform.
Without question, the modern advances in plastic surgery are incredible. And if the stated goal of the practice is to allow people to feel more comfortable in their own bodies, then surgeons should at least consider bizarre requests. Maybe Vulcan ears aren't for everyone, but they could make that special someone very, very happy.
