Plastic surgery is continuing to rise in popularity, both in the United States and around the globe. In fact, just last year, American plastic surgeons performed over 15 million cosmetic procedures, with a combined estimated price tag of over $10 billion.
That’s a lot of money being spent on treatments and surgeries that are, in the majority of cases, entirely elective. But what are patients spending all that money on? When it comes to plastic surgery, what procedures are the most requested?
Perhaps not surprisingly, the most popular procedures all involve minimally invasive cosmetic fillers, with Botox leading the charge to the tune of more than 6 million injections last year. Directly behind Botox on the list are soft tissue fillers, at around 2 million procedures performed, followed by chemical peels and laser hair removal treatments, both of which were done just over a million times in 2014.
When it comes to cosmetic surgery, breast augmentation leads the list with nearly 300,000 procedures performed in 2014. Trailing closely behind are rhinoplasty and liposuction, each of which accounted for around 210,000 of last year’s surgeries. Closely following these is eyelid surgery, at 200,000. And rounding out the top five most popular procedures are facelifts, which were done more than 120,000 times last year.
When it comes to cosmetic surgery, many patients will visit their doctors’ offices with a specific look in mind, usually inspired by a celebrity who is well known for a certain feature. According to several plastic surgeons, a number of trends have started to emerge, with numerous patients asking for the same looks inspired by same celebrities.
In the last year, patients frequently asked that their lips look like Scarlett Johansson’s. When it comes to eyes, patients want to look like Olivia Munn. Not surprisingly, patients undergoing buttocks implantation most frequently asked for their backsides to look like Kim Kardashian’s. Patients getting their noses reshaped wanted to look like Kate Middleton. And for women wanting work done on their chins, the most frequent request was to look like Kate Bosworth.
Given the rise in cosmetic surgery as well as our celebrity-obsessed culture, celeb-inspired plastic surgery requests are only going to continue rising in the years to come. But with celebrities’ popularity constantly rising and falling, the real question is which celebrities will serve as the ideal models for various body parts in the future.
