All across the globe, cosmetic surgery is more popular today than it has even been before. This increase in demand for cosmetic enhancements has had a particular impact in China, where both qualified doctors and medical novices are jumping on the bandwagon and learning to perform various types of micro cosmetic surgeries and other procedures. Unfortunately, while the laws surrounding plastic surgery are relatively strict in China, there is very little enforcement of these laws nationwide. This lack of enforcement coupled with the minimal education of new practitioners has led to an epidemic of botched cosmetic procedures across the country.
In some parts of China, proper cosmetic training is woefully lacking. According to experts, there are facilities where trainees practice their techniques by injecting Botox and other injectables into one another’s faces. After receiving this minimal amount of hands-on training, as well as participating in a scant amount of other coursework, trainees are sometimes given cosmetology certificates a mere four days after first starting the training course. When you consider that, in America, plastic surgeons must complete a minimum of six years of specialized training, it’s shocking to think that there are people out there performing cosmetic procedures after less than a week of education.
The money offered by cosmetic procedures isn’t just attractive to medical novices. Increasingly, a number of plastic surgeons in China are changing their practices to focus exclusively on cosmetic enhancements. But there are important differences between general plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery. And while plastic surgeons may be able to perform procedures safely, they may not be able to give their patients the natural, undoctored look that is the key to successful cosmetic enhancement.
Given the rise in unskilled practitioners, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that China has seen an increase in botched cosmetic procedures. Not only are patients often dissatisfied with the outcome of procedures, but on occasion they also experience serious side effects. And since these new practitioners don’t have a comprehensive knowledge of medicine, they often have no idea how to fix their mistakes. In fact, many of these unskilled surgeons will lure in customers with cheap prices and then disappear if a procedure ends in disaster.
The lesson in all this is that plastic surgery should never be taken lightly. If you’re thinking of undergoing a procedure anywhere in the world, be sure that you’re being tended to by a qualified cosmetic doctor.
