Plastic surgery is continuing to grow in popularity. In the United States, plastic surgeons have reported an astounding 600% increase in procedures since the mid 1990s. Last year, the accumulated price tag for all of those procedures was roughly $12 billion, and the industry shows no signs of slowing down.
What is changing, however, are the kinds of procedures that plastic surgeons are performing, and some of the latest trends are a little bit surprising.
Plastic surgery is typically thought of as a way to help people slim down, and liposuction is one of the most well known procedures. Lately though, patients have been asking their doctors to put fat into their bodies, at least in certain areas.
As people get older, they tend to lose fat in their face. This loss of fat can result in a gaunt appearance, making people look older than they are. Increasingly, patients have been requesting facial fat injections to help combat this problem, and the procedure is becoming more and more popular.
With celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea getting constant attention for their well-endowed backsides, it shouldn’t come as a shock that the demand for buttock augmentation skyrocketed in 2014. Although the overall number of buttock implant procedures may seem relatively low, hovering just north of 21,000, that number represents an almost 90% increase over 2013. That’s a dramatic spike, and it’ll be interesting to see how those numbers compare to the number buttock augmentations done this year.
According to experts, one of the biggest surprises has been the recent uptick in labiaplasties. Typically, women get labiaplasties to reduce the size of their labias or to give them smoother, more appealing shapes. Until recently, this procedure was relatively obscure, but as awareness of labiaplasties has increased so has their popularity, and according to experts nearly 8,000 labiaplasties were performed last year.
Despite the rise in popularity of these procedures, they’re still a long way from the top. That honor continues to belong to breast augmentations and rhinoplasties, which have been two of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the U.S. for years and accounted for more than half a million of the procedures done last year.
Ultimately, plastic surgery is no different than any other industry. Fads come and go. Ten years ago, nobody would have predicted the rise of fat injections or buttocks implants, and nobody can say for sure what will be popular ten years from today.
