All across the globe, plastic surgery is a female-driven industry. This trend was especially true in Brazil, where, once upon a time, plastic surgery was even considered taboo for men, but that trend has certainly changed in the last few years. According to recent numbers, Brazilian men are now undergoing cosmetic surgery at a staggering rate: a new procedure is performed every two minutes. But what accounts for this recent surge in plastic surgery in the country and what procedures are Brazilian men choosing to get?
In the past couple of decades, cosmetic surgery has gained popularity all around the world, and today the practice is more common than it’s ever been before. One of the major reasons for this growth in popularity is that advances in the cosmetic surgery field have made the enhancements almost seamless, improving patients’ looks without leaving any telltale marks that surgery has been performed.
Brazil is one of the countries leading the way for these advancements, and many medical professionals now consider the country to be a leader in the field of cosmetic enhancement. With their state-of-the-art training and techniques, Brazilian plastic surgeons have largely erased the stigma of plastic surgery and helped to make it more popular across the country, especially for men.
Between 2009 and 2014, cosmetic surgery quadrupled in popularity amongst Brazilian men, increasing from 72,000 procedures to over 276,000 procedures a year. On average, that means that plastic surgeons in Brail are operating on roughly 32 men every hour. By and large, cosmetic surgery patients in the country are between the ages of 20 and 50, but seniors are increasingly choosing to go under the knife, either because they’re hoping to stay in the workforce longer or because men are living active lifestyles well into their 70's and 80's.
When it comes to the most popular procedures for men, the top choice is male breast reduction, focusing on the appearance of the pectoral area. Additionally, a large number of Brazilian men also undergo eyelid alterations, which enhance the appearance of youthfulness by removing wrinkles and under-eye sagginess, and liposuction to remove excess fat around the midsection.
Although the numbers for Brazil are staggering, the fact remains, plastic surgery is becoming more popular for men all around the world. And so long as cosmetic enhancement continues to gain acceptance, the number of men looking to undergo procedures will continue to rise.
